At staff meeting today we had Jay Barber, who just recently retired from Warner Pacific College, do a little devotional with us. You could call it a break out session from our regular staff meeting.
He was great, the man exudes a kind of sweet wisdom that you can’t help but be captivated by when he talks. Here are some of the things he talked about to help us lead in the church and personally.
1. Learn to listen
You don’t always have to fill the silence.
Proverbs 17:28
2. Do what you do best and drop the rest.
You are gifted in your own way, concentrate on those things,
Micheal Jordon was a great basketball player, not a very good baseball player.
Proverbs 18:16
3. Work with people you like.
Invite sharp debate but genuinely like each other because life is too short to work with jerks.
Proverbs 17:17
4. Many times you learn the most from the most unlikely sources.
Go outside your box of influence so as to gain perspective on your journey.
Proverbs 20:25
5. Lower your expectations of people because they will always disappoint you.
Raise your expectations of God because he will always meet your needs.
Proverbs 21:2
Proverbs 30:5
6. Learn to take chances.
From time to time abandon security, put it all on the line. Step out into places you have no insurance for.
Proverbs 16:8
7. No when to say no.
Learn not to say yes to everything that comes your way. Know you limitations.
Matthew 18:18
8. Choose your life partner carefully.
It will impact the effectiveness of your calling.
Proverbs 18:22
Proverbs 17:22
9. Learn to forgive.
To trust and to love without reservation. Unforgiveness is like holding acid in your hands, you can do it but you pay an awful price.
Proverbs 19:11
